Compassion Across Borders

As the conflict in Ukraine escalated, sending waves of refugees into neighboring countries, Romania and its churches emerged as beacons of hope. In the days leading up to the Russian invasion in February 2022, Romanian believers gathered for a pivotal meeting, discussing ways to mobilize their churches in sharing Christ’s love. Little did they know, their resolve would be tested almost immediately.

“The response was like a wave,” recalls Cornel, who leads OM’s work in Romania. “Everyone was drawn to the border to assist the incoming refugees.” Remarkably, it was the churches that were the first responders, ahead of government and aid organizations.

OM’s team in Romania, in collaboration with local churches, is providing essential aid and comfort to those fleeing Ukraine. Their mission is to activate local churches for this humanitarian effort, offering everything from transport to hotels, to warm cups of tea, and a safe place to rest. “We are here to serve and meet their needs,” Cornel emphasizes.

The sight at the border is poignant, with families arriving only to be separated; women and children crossing into Romania, while the men stay behind. “It’s a heart-wrenching scene, but it has also awakened the church in Romania, showcasing unprecedented levels of love and care,” Cornel observes.

Amidst this crisis, a church plant near the Ukraine-Romania border is experiencing a spiritual revival. Previously struggling to engage the community in gospel conversations, they now find themselves at the forefront of ministering to the needs of Ukrainian refugees. This has led to a fresh approach, taking the church to the people rather than waiting for them to come on Sundays. The results have been transformative, leading to deeper spiritual discussions with both Ukrainians and locals.

Responding to the needs within Ukraine, this church plant and other local believers have started collecting essential items for those still in the conflict zone. This effort is bolstered by global donations, enabling the distribution of food, clothing, generators, and more, both at the border and inside Ukraine. “Our goal is to identify and address the most significant needs, often in areas overlooked by others,” says Cornel.

Cornel’s story is one of missions and compassion. Having converted to Christianity from a Jewish background at 15, he initially did not see missions as part of his calling. However, his journey to India, Brazil, and China opened his eyes to the need for sharing Jesus’ love globally. This experience has since fueled his passion to mobilize the Romanian church for mission work, whether it’s in distant lands or closer home.

One touching instance highlights the profound impact of these efforts. A Ukrainian mother, fleeing with her two children, one of whom is autistic, was astonished to see her son communicating effortlessly with the volunteers. “The way God moves among people in these difficult times is incredible,” Cornel reflects.

This story is a testament to the power of faith, love, and community in times of crisis. It’s a narrative of how compassion can cross borders, uniting people in the face of adversity and inspiring a collective effort to extend Jesus’ love to those in dire need.
